resilient women project

resilient women project

featured in Typeforce 9 (2018)

Historically speaking, society has placed expectations on women to fulfill a role primarily subservient to males and reductive notions have been projected onto women since as far back as our collective memory can recall. We wanted to flip the script, reclaim some of these notions, and project them onto our physical selves in order to put a human face onto each story.

I and fellow artist Christina Zouras sat down with some of the most resilient women we know, including ourselves, and vulnerably shared our experiences of degradation, neglect, physical abuse, sexual harassment and sexual assault. All of these projected words shown in the images are transcribed from the actual anecdote. To create these set of image we played around with type, lighting, and the human figure.

As female artists who’ve had their fair share of hardships, we feel it’s our calling to honor and give voice to other women. We hope that these thought provoking pieces will inspire those difficult yet healing conversations we’ve been suppressing.
